Honesty First, Then Client Interest

The term “real estate agent” and “Realtor’ are not synonymous. Only Realtors are members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), and pledge to conduct their business in accordance with the tenets set forth in the NAR Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

With that background, the very first article of the Code of Ethics addresses honesty versus client interest. While Realtors certainly have an obligation to protect and promote the interest of their client, it does not relieve them of their duty to treat all parties to the transaction honestly. Even though a client may believe they are being harmed by this pledge, honesty is in the long term best for everyone.
